On November 15 Belgium celebrates the King’s Day
The King’s Day has been celebrated since 1866, initially to honour King Leopold I (1790-1865), the first monarch of Belgium. Even though it is not a national holiday, most government offices are closed on this day, as the date is recognized as the King's official birthday. Since 2001, the Belgian Federal Parliament holds a ceremony in honour of the King, in the presence of members of the Belgian Royal Family and other dignitaries. Traditionally, the King doesn’t attend as protocol decrees that it would be inappropriate for him to honour himself. November 15 is also known as Saint Leopold’s Name’s Day in Germany, where the Belgian royal family is originally from.
